The Honda S2000 is as desirable as ever. It's a lightweight rear-wheel drive two-seater with great looks, and a high-revving VTEC engine. It checks all of the boxes, and seeing as how there's no real replacement in sight, values are starting to climb.

If you're in the market for an S2000, you have a lot to choose from. Over its eight years of production, it saw an engine update, as well as a slight styling change. There was even a hardcore Club Racer version (pictured above) for those who wanted to extract the most performance possible on track from the factory offered towards the end of production.
The people behind YouTube channel Savagegeese—known for its extremely detailed car reviews—put together a dedicated buyer's guide video outlining everything you need to know before committing to an S2000 of your own. They go over common issues, what to look for in maintenance records, and numerous other factors. If you're even remotely interested in owning an S2000, this video is definitely worth a watch.
The Honda S2000 has occupied an interesting space in the used car market. It's a niche vehicle for people who want a fun, track-capable roadster that isn't a Miata. Fast, nimble, and good-looking, it's one of Honda's greatest cars ever. Nowadays, low-mileage examples are starting to appreciate in value. This one has just 1001 miles on the clock, and it just sold on Bring a Trailer for $48,000. Yep, you read that right.
Honda stopped selling the S2000 in 2008, and hasn't offered any sort of replacement. There hasn't really been a car like it since. Sure, you can still buy a new Miata, but it doesn't have that VTEC engine that revs to 9000 RPM. That's one of the main reasons you see so many S2000s at track days—that, and Honda's reputation for bulletproof reliability. You can't buy anything truly like the S2000 today, which explains why someone decided to drop so much cash on an example that barely saw any driving time during its 18 years with its original owner.
The car in question is a first-year AP1 model painted in New Formula Red. According to Bring a Trailer, the car was delivered new to Blair Honda in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and stored in a collection for the first 13 years of its life. The dealership was sold off, and the car went to its first owner in 2013, who drove it just 988 miles over five years (that's around 198 miles per year, in case you're wondering). As you'd expect from an S2000 someone just dropped $16,000 more than its original MSRP on, it's in absolutely perfect condition. The paint, body panels, underside, engine bay, wheels, interior, and everything else are in shockingly great shape. Even the warning tab for the airbags, the one the customer is supposed to take off upon delivery, is still mounted on the dash. All of the original paperwork, including the window sticker and a supplemental SCCA pamphlet, are included. In all likelihood, this is the cleanest, most complete, lowest-mileage S2000 on the planet. If any S200o is worth $48,000, it's this one.
Update 11/7/2018: IndyCar driver Graham Rahal revealed on Twitter he was the buyer of this S2000, touting himself as a massive Honda fan who couldn't pass on the opportunity to own this car.
I am so excited to be bringing this home! As a lifeline @honda man, this was a car i simply couldn’t pass up on. My pops has a red S600, and this will sit beautifully next to it! @Bringatrailer always has the coolest stuff! https://t.co/RIYp6S8zR2

We reached out to Rahal to see if he has any future plans for the car, and here's what he told us:
Really it’s a collection piece for me. My dad has a red S600 we’ve been having restored, so I felt this was the ideal car to go with it. Perfect in every way. I’m sure I’ll drive it a little, but in the end it’s really a great piece of Honda history for us to have and own! I’ve been on the hunt for an S2K or CR for awhile so this ticked the boxes. I felt I got it for a decent price too which was surprising.
